A gunman was shot and killed by U.S. Secret Service agents after opening fire near the White House in Washington, D.C., in an incident that briefly placed the presidential complex under lockdown.

According to officials and multiple media reports, the shooting occurred on Saturday evening at around 6 p.m. local time near the intersection of 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue, close to a Secret Service security checkpoint outside the White House perimeter.

The suspect allegedly approached the area carrying a bag and suddenly drew a firearm before beginning to fire indiscriminately. Secret Service personnel on duty immediately responded and returned fire, striking the gunman.

The injured suspect was quickly taken to a nearby hospital, where medical staff later pronounced him dead.

Authorities said the incident appeared to be an attempted attack targeting law enforcement personnel at the checkpoint, although the exact motive remains under investigation. Early accounts from witnesses suggested that approximately 15 to 30 rounds were heard during the exchange of gunfire.

One civilian was also injured in the shooting, though it remains unclear whether the person was hit during the initial gunfire or the subsequent exchange between the gunman and security forces.

Following the shooting, the White House complex was placed under immediate lockdown. Dozens of journalists and staff inside the premises were escorted to secure areas, including the press briefing room, as security protocols were activated. The lockdown lasted for about an hour before being lifted.

Officials confirmed that U.S. President Donald Trump was inside the White House at the time of the incident. He was reported to be safe throughout the situation, and there was no disruption to White House operations.

No Secret Service personnel were injured during the incident.

Law enforcement agencies, including the Secret Service and local police, have launched a full investigation. The identity of the gunman and further details about his background or intentions have not yet been released.
