PM Karki Convenes NSC Meeting to Address Escalating Simara Unrest

Prime Minister Sushila Karki has called a meeting of the National Security Council (NSC) in light of increasing security concerns across the country, particularly in areas like Bara. The meeting was scheduled amid anxieties from major political parties, including the Nepali Congress and CPN (UML), that the heightened tensions could potentially disrupt the upcoming national election scheduled for February 21.

The council meeting commenced this afternoon at the NSC Secretariat in Singha Durbar. The agenda included a comprehensive review of recent incidents, the overall national security landscape, the prevailing political atmosphere leading up to the election, and the preparedness of all security agencies.

The security situation in Bara’s Simara has been a key focal point, following ongoing clashes since Wednesday. Local authorities have imposed a curfew after an altercation broke out between activists affiliated with the CPN (UML)’s youth wing and a group identified as “Gen Z.” The curfew period has been extended until 8:00 PM tonight after the “Gen Z” group escalated their protests this morning, demanding action against those responsible for the attack.

The Prime Minister decided to call the council meeting in response to the growing concern over the situation in Simara and the consistent appeal from political parties for peace, security, and the creation of a reliable election environment. This meeting follows an initial security review session held at the Ministry of Home Affairs on Wednesday evening.
