Kathmandu: Long-Distance Buses Barred from Roadside Stops

To control the increasing traffic jams in the Kathmandu Valley, traffic police have started a strict new rule.

From now on, all long-distance buses whether day or night services must depart only from the designated bus parks. They are no longer allowed to stop anywhere on the roadside to pick up or drop off passengers.

According to Naresh Raj Subedi, spokesperson for the Valley Traffic Police Office, long-distance buses had been stopping along the road like local buses. This caused serious traffic jams, especially during peak hours.

He said, “Traffic is getting heavier in Kathmandu. When long-distance buses stop illegally on the road to take passengers, the jam becomes worse. So now every long-distance bus must start only from the bus park.”

Traffic police have also requested the concerned authorities to review the route permits of these buses to improve management.

Subedi added that traffic jams directly affect people’s daily lives, so long-term solutions require coordination among all responsible agencies.

To strengthen road discipline, traffic police have also taken stricter steps. Drivers who break rules—such as running red lights, changing lanes improperly, speeding, or driving under the influence of alcohol—must now attend mandatory awareness classes. Plans are being made to make these classes more effective.

In addition, online awareness classes have also started. Drivers using the mobile app must uninstall it once and install it again to access the new system. With this update, people can take the class from home, making it easier for everyone.

Traffic police believe that after the new rule is fully enforced, problems like unmanaged parking, unnecessary stopping, and poor passenger management will improve.

They said they are committed to improving traffic management in the valley and making travel easier for the public.
