Schools Close in Nepalgunj Areas Due to Extreme Cold

Persistent thick fog and a severe cold wave have disrupted daily life in Banke district, leading local authorities to announce school closures. Nepalgunj Sub-Metropolitan City, Kohalpur Municipality, and Khajura Rural Municipality have all issued directives to shut down educational institutions to protect students from the freezing temperatures.

The Kohalpur Municipal Education Branch has decided to suspend classes for two days, specifically on December 24 and December 26. This decision was made based on weather forecasts and recommendations from health experts. Officials noted that the extreme cold poses a significant risk to the health of children traveling to school in the early morning.

In Khajura Rural Municipality, the education committee held an emergency meeting on Tuesday and also approved a closure for December 24 and 26. Because December 25 is a public holiday for Christmas and December 27 is Saturday, students in this area will effectively have a four-day break from classes.

Nepalgunj Sub-Metropolitan City has scheduled its winter break from December 26 through December 29. Education Division Chief Gorkha Bahadur Thapa explained that the closure coincides with both the worsening cold wave and the scheduled Nepalgunj Running Shield sports competition.

Authorities are advising residents to stay warm and limit outdoor activities during peak fog hours. The cold wave has also affected local transportation, with visibility significantly reduced on major highways across the Terai region.
