Toddler dies in Humla house fire

A two-year-old boy died after a fire broke out at a settlement in Thali village of Kharpunath Rural Municipality-2, Humla, on Friday evening.

The victim has been identified as Rebend Jedara. According to local resident Daya Rawal, the toddler was caught in the inferno that engulfed the houses of Chepi Jethara and Ramraj Jethara.

The fire, which started late Friday, completely destroyed two houses and reduced all household belongings to ashes before it could be brought under control.

Police Inspector Bishnu Shrestha, who also serves as the spokesperson for the District Police Office in Humla, confirmed the fatality. “While the death of the minor has been confirmed, we are still awaiting a detailed report from the site regarding the cause of the fire and the full extent of the property damage,” Shrestha told the Post.

Fire incidents in Nepal’s high-altitude settlements often turn fatal due to the close proximity of houses, the use of timber in construction, and the lack of immediate firefighting equipment in remote regions. Local authorities frequently cite delayed response times and a lack of awareness regarding fire safety as major challenges in mitigating such disasters.
