Indonesia Becomes First Country to Ban Elon Musk’s AI Chatbot Grok

Indonesia has banned Grok, the AI chatbot developed by Elon Musk’s company xAI.

The Indonesian government said the decision was taken due to the spread of AI-generated sexual content and deepfake images. With this move, Indonesia has become the first country in the world to impose a ban on Grok.

According to Indonesia’s Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs, Meutya Hafid, the ban was enforced because unauthorized sexual deepfakes created using the chatbot violate human rights, personal dignity, and digital safety. The Indonesian government has also summoned officials from X to seek an explanation on the matter.

It is worth noting that Indonesia is the country with the world’s largest Muslim population and has strict laws against the distribution of obscene content on the internet.

Meanwhile, concerns regarding X’s AI chatbot Grok have been raised by several countries across Europe and Asia. Regulators in some countries have already begun investigations into the presence of sexual and sensitive content on the app.

In response, xAI has acknowledged that due to security loopholes in Grok, some responses contained sexual and inappropriate content involving minors. Following this, the company has restricted its image generation and editing features to paid users only. It also stated that efforts are underway to fix vulnerabilities that allowed such objectionable content to appear.

Additionally, Elon Musk posted on X stating that those who use Grok to create illegal content should face the same punishment as those who upload illegal material.
