Norway Eye First Knockout Berth in 28 Years, Senegal Need Points to Stay Alive

Norway and Senegal face off in a crucial FIFA World Cup 2026 Group I clash on Tuesday, with both teams seeking a positive result for different reasons.

The match will be played at the New York New Jersey Stadium and is scheduled to kick off at 5:45 AM Nepal time.

After winning their opening match, Norway are aiming to secure a second consecutive victory and book their place in the knockout stage, while Senegal need at least a point to keep their qualification hopes firmly alive following defeat in their first game.

Norway made a dream return to the World Cup after a 28-year absence by defeating Iraq 4-1 in their opening fixture. Star striker Erling Haaland stole the headlines with two goals on his World Cup debut, helping his side make an impressive start to the tournament.

Senegal, meanwhile, were unable to repeat their famous victory over France from the 2002 World Cup. Despite an encouraging first-half performance, the African side failed to capitalize on their chances and eventually suffered a 3-1 defeat after Kylian Mbappé scored twice in the second half.

Rare Meeting Between the Two Nations

This will be only the second-ever meeting between Norway and Senegal in international football and their first encounter at a FIFA World Cup.

The only previous meeting came in a friendly match in 2006, when Senegal defeated Norway 2-1 on home soil.

Norway Target Early Qualification

Norway know that a victory could secure their place in the knockout stage before their final group match against France.

The Scandinavians last appeared at the World Cup in 1998, where they reached the Round of 16 before being eliminated 1-0 by Italy. Now, after waiting nearly three decades to return to football’s biggest stage, Norway are eager to make the most of their opportunity.

With a difficult final group match against France still to come, securing qualification early would be a major boost for the Norwegian side.

Senegal Facing Must-Win Pressure

For Senegal, widely regarded as one of Africa’s football powerhouses, avoiding defeat is crucial.

Having already faced tournament favorites France and with a final group match against Iraq remaining, any points earned against Norway could prove decisive in the race for the knockout rounds. Even a draw would keep Senegal’s hopes alive heading into their final fixture, where victory over Iraq could still be enough to advance.

Players to Watch

All eyes will once again be on Haaland, who announced his arrival on the World Cup stage with a two-goal performance against Iraq. The prolific striker’s physical presence, movement inside the penalty area, and clinical finishing will present a major challenge for Senegal’s defense.

Norway will also rely heavily on captain Martin Ødegaard, whose creativity and control in midfield are key to the team’s attacking play.

For Senegal, experienced winger Sadio Mané remains a vital figure. At 34, his leadership and big-match experience could play a crucial role in guiding his team through a difficult situation.

Chelsea forward Nicolas Jackson will also be one to watch, with his combination play alongside Mané and Ismaïla Sarr capable of causing problems for the Norwegian defense.

With Norway aiming to end a 28-year wait for a place in the knockout rounds and Senegal fighting to keep their World Cup dream alive, Tuesday’s encounter promises to be one of the most significant matches of the group stage so far.
