Nepal Government Orders Immediate Ban on Betting Apps and Websites

The Government of Nepal has decided to shut down all betting applications and related websites operating in the country.

The first Cabinet meeting led by Prime Minister Balen Shah approved a 100-point “Governance Reform Program,” which includes a directive to completely ban betting apps and associated websites within 24 hours.

Although betting has long been considered illegal in Nepal, its use has been rapidly increasing in recent years through mobile apps and online platforms. Foreign betting apps and websites have also been operating in the country, while various betting-related pages on social media have been actively promoting such activities.

Authorities have faced challenges in controlling the spread of betting due to the lack of clear and specific laws governing the sector.

However, individuals involved in betting activities during various sporting events in Nepal have been arrested by police from time to time.
