Moderate to Heavy Snowfall Expected in Mountain Regions of Koshi and Bagmati

Snowfall in Nepal

The Department of Hydrology and Meteorology has forecast moderate snowfall in some high hill and Himalayan areas of Koshi, Bagmati, and Gandaki Provinces today.

According to the department, a few locations in the high hill and Himalayan regions of Koshi and Bagmati may experience heavy snowfall.

Water levels in major rivers — including the Bagmati, Kamala, Koshi, and Kankai — and their tributaries are expected to rise significantly. The department has warned that water levels may reach alert stages, with a chance of sudden flooding in small rivers and streams flowing through the Mahabharat and Chure ranges of Koshi, Bagmati, and Madhesh Provinces.

The risk of sudden floods also remains high in small rivers passing through Kathmandu Valley, Kavre, Sindhupalchok, Dolakha, Makwanpur, Chitwan, and Sindhuli of Bagmati Province; Bara, Parsa, Sarlahi, Rautahat, Mahottari, Dhanusha, and Saptari of Madhesh Province; and Sankhuwasabha, Taplejung, Panchthar, Tehrathum, Bhojpur, Dhankuta, Ilam, Jhapa, Morang, and Sunsari of Koshi Province.

The department has also cautioned that the predicted rain and snowfall could lead to floods, landslides, and disruptions in daily life, transportation, agriculture, and tourism activities.

Meanwhile, the cyclone ‘Maantha’, which formed in the Bay of Bengal, is currently moving toward Andhra Pradesh, India. The department said the cyclone is expected to weaken gradually after entering India and move north-northwest as a low-pressure system near central Nepal, before shifting eastward.
