Bus Accident Prompts Highway Blockade in Panchkhal

A pedestrian was fatally struck by a passenger bus in Panchkhal Municipality-4, Kavrepalanchok, leading to a local protest that subsequently blocked the Araniko Highway. Dil Bahadur Shrestha, 65, identified by the local name ‘Tindhare Maila,’ died while receiving treatment after being hit by the vehicle. The incident, which occurred as two buses reportedly raced to pick up passengers, has resulted in a demand for compensation from the victim’s family.

Mr. Shrestha was immediately transported to Dhulikhel Hospital following the collision due to serious injuries. Panchkhal Mayor Mahesh Kharel confirmed that Mr. Shrestha succumbed to his injuries during the course of his treatment at the hospital. The bus, registered as Ba 2 Kha 6579, reportedly lost control and struck Mr. Shrestha while engaged in a competitive maneuver with another bus.

Following the confirmation of the fatality, local residents initiated a protest by obstructing the Araniko Highway. The demonstrators are demanding that the bus operator or relevant authorities provide appropriate compensation to the deceased’s family. Police Post Panchkhal Chief Prashant Tamang confirmed the traffic disruption on the major highway.

Mayor Kharel stated that efforts are currently underway to negotiate a resolution regarding compensation for the victim’s family. He also indicated that authorities are actively working to de-escalate the situation and reopen the vital Araniko Highway to resume traffic flow. The resolution of the protest remains contingent on the agreement reached concerning the compensation demands.
