Group J of the 2026 FIFA World Cup is being viewed as one of the easiest on paper, yet also one of the most unpredictable groups of the tournament.

The group features defending world champions Argentina national football team, Algeria returning to the World Cup after 12 years, Austria making their comeback after 28 years, and Jordan appearing at the tournament for the first time in history.

Although Argentina appear to have a comfortable path on paper, the group still carries strong upset potential, especially from Algeria and Austria, both of whom are capable of challenging bigger teams.

Argentina will enter the tournament aiming to defend their title, with captain Lionel Messi expected to play a key role once again. Meanwhile, Algeria, Austria and Asian side Jordan are likely to be involved in a fierce battle for qualification.

Defending champions Argentina will once again step onto the World Cup stage with hopes of retaining the trophy. However, much of the spotlight remains on Lionel Messi.

Algeria return to the World Cup for the first time since 2014 and are regarded as one of Africa’s most dangerous sides.

Under coach Vladimir Petković, the team plays with an attacking mentality, combining the experience of Riyad Mahrez with the pace of Mohamed Amoura.

A 7-0 victory over Guatemala in March highlighted Algeria’s attacking quality. The team’s tactical flexibility between 4-4-2 and 3-4-2-1 formations could trouble stronger opponents.

If their defence remains stable, Algeria could emerge as the group’s biggest dark horse. After reaching the Round of 16 in 2014, their target will once again be to reach the knockout stage.

Austria return to the World Cup after 28 years under the leadership of coach Ralf Rangnick and his high-pressing philosophy.

The team impressed during the European qualifiers, scoring 22 goals and showcasing their attacking strength. Marcel Sabitzer, Marko Arnautović and Konrad Laimer are among the side’s key players.

Rangnick’s 4-2-3-1 system is designed to apply pressure high up the pitch. If Austria can maintain that intensity, they could make a major impact in the group.

Mousa Al-Tamari is considered the team’s biggest weapon and has the ability to surprise any opponent.

Although Jordan are viewed as the weakest side in the group, their fearless approach and lack of pressure could make them a dangerous opponent.
