Balen Shah Signals Strategic Shift Toward New Political Party Formation

Kathmandu Metropolitan City Mayor Balen Shah held an extensive series of meetings on Wednesday with more than 30 influential figures, including political leaders, activists, artists, and media professionals. The discussions, held at a private residence in Lalitpur, suggest the Mayor is preparing to launch or lead a new political initiative ahead of future elections.

The attendees represented a broad spectrum of Nepali public life. Notable participants included Dr. Bhagawan Koirala, Rastriya Prajatantra Party leader Gyanendra Shahi, and Janmat Party Chairman Dr. CK Raut. Mayor Shah also consulted with media executives, journalists, and popular artists to gauge support for a potential political shift.

According to former Secretary Bhim Upadhyay, who attended the meeting, the sessions focused on the possibility of a new political force. Mayor Shah reportedly inquired whether participants would support the formal announcement of a new party. Most attendees expressed a positive outlook on the proposal, citing the need for alternative political leadership in the country.

During the briefings, Mayor Shah also discussed his recent late-night meeting with Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) Chairman Rabi Lamichhane. While there were discussions regarding a possible alliance, Mayor Shah indicated that no concrete agreement was reached. He noted that while there is an opening for collaboration, he is currently inclined toward moving forward with an independent organizational structure.

Reports indicate that the “Desh Bikash Party,” which features the “Walking Stick” (Lauro) election symbol, has already been registered with the Election Commission by associates of the Mayor. This party is expected to serve as the primary vehicle for his political movement if he decides to transition from local governance to a national role.

While some leaders from the RSP have suggested the possibility of Mayor Shah as a future prime ministerial candidate, Chairman Rabi Lamichhane stated in recent media comments that such specific discussions have not yet matured. As of now, Mayor Shah remains in active dialogue with various stakeholders to finalize his strategic direction.
