Egypt have climbed to the top of FIFA World Cup 2026 Group G after defeating New Zealand 3–1 in a match played on Monday morning.

New Zealand actually drew first blood, with Finn Smarryan finding the net in the 15th minute to give his side the lead. However, they were unable to hold on, and Egypt turned the game around to claim a convincing victory.

Mohamed Salah, Mostafa Ziko, and Trezeguet each scored once for Egypt. Ziko leveled the score in the 58th minute, before Egypt captain Salah put his side ahead just nine minutes later. Trezeguet then extended the lead in the 82nd minute, putting the result beyond doubt.

Egypt dominated throughout in terms of both possession and shots.

With the win, Egypt now have 4 points from 2 matches and sit at the top of Group G. Their chances of advancing to the knockout stage have grown significantly. Iran and Belgium are level on 2 points each, while New Zealand remain on 1 point.
