FIFA World Cup 2026: Messi, Ronaldo, Mbappé and Yamal Among the Stars to Watch

The stage is set. The players are ready. Organizers have completed their preparations, and fans around the world are counting down the days. Now, all eyes turn to the pitch as the world’s best footballers prepare to compete on the sport’s grandest stage.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup will kick off on June 11, bringing together the world’s top football nations in a historic tournament hosted jointly by the United States, Mexico, and Canada.

For many supporters, this World Cup could mark the final appearance of two of football’s greatest icons — Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. At the same time, a new generation of stars, including Erling Haaland, Lamine Yamal, and Kylian Mbappé, are ready to make their mark.

The expanded tournament will feature 48 nations and 1,248 players competing over 39 days. While some players have already lifted the World Cup trophy and boast years of experience, more than two-thirds of the participants will be appearing at football’s biggest event for the first time.

Here are some of the biggest stars expected to dominate headlines at the 2026 World Cup.

Lionel Messi (Argentina)

At 38, Messi enters the tournament with far less pressure than four years ago. The Argentine legend fulfilled his lifelong dream by leading Argentina to World Cup glory in Qatar in 2022.

Having won every major trophy at both club and international level, Messi is set to become the first player to appear in six World Cups. He already holds the record for the most World Cup appearances with 26 matches and is closing in on another milestone.

Messi has scored 13 World Cup goals, just three behind the all-time record of 16 held by German striker Miroslav Klose. Three goals would see him equal the record, while four would make him the tournament’s all-time leading scorer.

Argentina will also be aiming to defend their title, something no nation has achieved since Brazil won consecutive World Cups in 1958 and 1962. With a squad featuring a strong blend of youth and experience, much will depend on how coach Lionel Scaloni manages Messi’s role throughout the tournament.

Cristiano Ronaldo (Portugal)

Unlike Messi, Ronaldo enters the 2026 World Cup with one major objective still missing from his illustrious career: a World Cup trophy.

The Portuguese superstar is preparing for a record-equalling sixth World Cup appearance at the age of 41. Despite his age, Ronaldo continues to maintain remarkable fitness and remains a key figure for Portugal.

Ronaldo has scored eight goals in 22 World Cup matches, but individual records are unlikely to be his primary focus. Instead, he will be determined to guide Portugal to their first-ever World Cup title.

Portugal possess a talented mix of experienced players and emerging stars, giving them a realistic chance of making a deep run. Under coach Roberto Martínez, Ronaldo will hope to turn what could be his “last dance” on football’s biggest stage into a memorable triumph.

Already the all-time leading scorer in men’s international football with 143 goals in 226 appearances, Ronaldo is also edging closer to the unprecedented milestone of 1,000 career goals.

Kylian Mbappé (France)

France captain Mbappé enters the tournament as one of the leading contenders to dominate both the scoring charts and the race for football’s biggest individual honors.

The 27-year-old forward won the World Cup in 2018 at just 19 years of age and helped France reach another final in 2022. Many view him as the player most likely to lead football into the post-Messi and Ronaldo era.

Despite an impressive collection of trophies and personal accolades, Mbappé is still chasing a UEFA Champions League title and the prestigious Ballon d’Or award. A successful World Cup campaign could significantly strengthen his chances of winning football’s most coveted individual prize.

Mbappé claimed the Golden Boot at the 2022 World Cup with eight goals, including a stunning hat-trick in the final against Argentina. He will once again be among the favorites to finish as the tournament’s top scorer.

Lamine Yamal (Spain)

At just 18 years old, Yamal will be one of the youngest stars at the tournament, but expectations surrounding him are already enormous.

The Spanish winger has established himself as one of football’s brightest talents through outstanding performances for both Spain and Barcelona. He played a crucial role in Spain’s UEFA Euro 2024 triumph and has already broken numerous age-related records.

Many football analysts believe Yamal has the talent to become one of the faces of world football. If he can replicate his club form on the international stage, he could challenge for the Golden Boot and set new records as one of the youngest major award winners in World Cup history.

His dazzling style of play has frequently drawn comparisons with Messi, and the two even shared a famous photoshoot when Yamal was a baby.

Erling Haaland (Norway)

Few strikers in world football are as feared as Haaland.

The 25-year-old Norwegian goal machine is set to fulfill a lifelong dream after helping Norway qualify for the World Cup for the first time in 28 years.

Haaland’s goals were instrumental during qualification, where he finished among Europe’s top scorers. His remarkable record-breaking exploits for Manchester City have already established him as one of the game’s elite forwards.

Making his World Cup debut, Haaland will carry the hopes of a Norwegian side widely regarded as one of the tournament’s dark horses. How far Norway progress could depend heavily on the form of their prolific striker.

Harry Kane (England)

England captain and all-time leading scorer Harry Kane heads into the tournament in outstanding form after helping Bayern Munich secure domestic success.

Kane won the Golden Boot at the 2018 World Cup in Russia and remains one of the most reliable goalscorers in international football.

As one of the favorites for the 2026 Golden Boot, Kane has an opportunity to make history. If he finishes as the tournament’s top scorer again, he would become the first player to win the award at two different World Cups.

With England once again considered serious title contenders, Kane’s goals could prove decisive in their quest to end decades of World Cup disappointment.

Neymar (Brazil)

Brazilian superstar Neymar remains one of the most talked-about figures ahead of the tournament.

Despite struggling with injuries in recent years, the 34-year-old forward has shown flashes of his best form since returning to Santos. However, fitness concerns continue to follow him.

Neymar is Brazil’s all-time leading scorer and is expected to feature in his fourth World Cup. Although he has yet to lift the trophy, coach Carlo Ancelotti continues to place his trust in the experienced playmaker.

Brazil are chasing a record-extending sixth World Cup title, and Neymar’s leadership and creativity could play an important role. Given his age and injury history, many believe this may be his final opportunity to achieve World Cup glory.

A Tournament of Legends and New Heroes

The 2026 FIFA World Cup promises a fascinating blend of football’s established icons and its next generation of superstars. While Messi and Ronaldo prepare for what could be their final appearances on the global stage, players such as Mbappé, Yamal, Haaland, Kane, and Neymar are ready to shape the tournament’s story.

Whether it is a veteran chasing one last dream or a young talent announcing himself to the world, the 2026 World Cup is set to deliver unforgettable moments for football fans across the globe.
