Mahesh Basnet Leads CPN-UML Secretary Race as Counting Progresses

The Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist-Leninist) has begun counting votes for the position of Secretary following elections held during its 11th National Convention. Preliminary results indicate that Mahesh Basnet has established a significant lead over other candidates as the process continues.

The election saw high participation, with 2,227 delegates casting their ballots out of a total 2,263 eligible voters. This high turnout reflects the internal engagement of the party as it selects its new leadership team for the upcoming term.

According to the latest tallies, Mahesh Basnet leads the field with 783 votes. He is followed by Khagaraj Adhikari with 680 votes and Yamlal Kandel with 626 votes. Other prominent candidates, including Rajan Bhattarai and Bhanubhakta Dhakal, remain in contention with 581 and 552 votes respectively.

The remaining candidates have recorded varying levels of support as the count moves through the official ballots. Notable tallies include Gokul Prasad Baskota at 528 votes and Padma Kumari Aryal at 478 votes. Candidates such as Chhabilal bishwakarma, Sherdhan Rai, and Thakur Prasad Gaire are currently maintaining totals within the 460 to 470 range.

The counting process is expected to continue until all ballots are verified and finalized. Once the tallying is complete, the party election commission will formally announce the winners who will fill the multiple Secretary positions within the CPN-UML organizational structure.
