NCP Gorkha Recommends Prachanda for Upcoming General Election

The Gorkha district committee of the Nepal Communist Party (NCP) has recommended party chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal, widely known as ‘Prachanda,’ as a candidate for the upcoming House of Representatives election scheduled for March 5, 2026 (Phagun 21).

According to NCP central committee member Amar Tamu, the district office meeting held on Wednesday finalized the names and formally forwarded the recommendations to the party’s central committee on Thursday.

Constituency Recommendations

The district committee has proposed five potential candidates for each of Gorkha’s two constituencies:

Gorkha Constituency No. 1:

  • Pushpa Kamal Dahal (Prachanda)
  • Hari Raj Adhikari
  • Jagannath Khanal
  • Shobha Lamichhane
  • Sagar Shrestha

Prachanda’s recommendation for Gorkha-1 marks a potential shift, as he successfully contested and won from Gorkha Constituency No. 2 during the 2022 general elections.

Gorkha Constituency No. 2:

  • Narayan Kaji Shrestha
  • Lekhnath Neupane
  • Hitraj Pandey
  • Sanumaya Basnet
  • Anish Aryal

Context of the Election

The recommendations come as political parties intensify their preparations for the general elections. Following the dissolution of the previous parliament in September 2025, the country is currently under an interim administration, with the Election Commission recently finalizing the schedule for the March polls.

The NCP’s move to recommend five names per constituency is part of a broader strategy to gauge local support before the central leadership makes a final decision on the tickets.
