Portugal secured a 2-1 victory over Nigeria in an international friendly on Wednesday as part of their preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Playing in Leiria, Portugal took the lead through Pedro Neto before Nigeria fought back with an equalizer from Akor Adams just before halftime.

The home side regained control in the second half when Francisco Conceição scored the winning goal in the 75th minute, sealing the victory for Portugal.

Chelsea forward Neto opened the scoring midway through the match, but Adams restored parity for Nigeria before the break to leave the teams level at halftime.

Despite creating several promising chances, Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo, 41, was unable to find the back of the net.

Ronaldo, who is set to feature in a record sixth FIFA World Cup, remains a key figure in the squad, although some observers have questioned whether his presence could affect the balance of coach Roberto Martínez’s strong lineup.

Martínez included several players fresh from Champions League success with Paris Saint-Germain, naming Vitinha, João Neves and Bruno Fernandes in the starting eleven.

Portugal will travel to Palm Beach, Florida, on Friday to establish their World Cup base camp. Drawn in Group K, Portugal will begin their 2026 World Cup campaign against DR Congo in Houston on June 17. They will then face Uzbekistan and Colombia in their remaining group-stage matches.
