Maghe Sankranti is one of Nepal’s most significant and widely celebrated festivals, typically falling around January 14th as it follows the solar calendar. This day marks the sun’s transition into the zodiac sign of Capricorn (Makara), signifying the end of the winter solstice and the beginning of the auspicious period known as ‘Uttarayan’ (the sun’s northward journey), which brings longer and warmer days.

The festival is a blend of cultural, religious, and agricultural significance. Devotees honor the Sun God, Surya, and take ritual dips in sacred river confluences like Devghat, Ridi, and the Bagmati, believing this act cleanses sins and purifies the soul. A central tradition revolves around food, where families gather to consume warming delicacies like til ko laddu (sesame seed balls), chaku (molasses/jaggery), ghee (clarified butter), and tarul (yams or sweet potatoes).

Culturally, Maghe Sankranti is profoundly important for several ethnic groups; for the Tharu community, it is celebrated as their New Year (Maghi), involving elaborate feasts and cultural dances, and it is also a major annual festival for the Magar community. This national festival promotes communal unity, marks the end of the harvest season, and symbolizes a fresh start toward prosperity and good health.
