What Is Teej?

Teej is a major Hindu festival dedicated to Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. The festival commemorates Goddess Parvati’s devotion and penance to attain Shiva as her husband. Married women observe the fast for the well-being and longevity of their husbands, while unmarried women pray for a good life partner.

How Is Teej Celebrated in Nepal?

The festival lasts for several days and is marked by vibrant celebrations across the country.

Dar Khane Din

The celebrations begin with Dar Khane Din, when women gather with family and friends to enjoy a grand feast before the fasting day. Traditional foods, sweets, fruits and special dishes are served as women sing and dance late into the night.

Haritalika Teej

On the main day, women dress in red saris, wear jewelry and apply mehendi. Many observe a strict fast and visit Shiva temples, especially the famous Pashupatinath Temple, to offer prayers and seek blessings.

Rishi Panchami

The festival concludes with Rishi Panchami, a day dedicated to purification rituals and prayers offered to the Sapta Rishis.

Why Teej Remains Special

Beyond its religious significance, Teej is also a celebration of sisterhood, family bonds and Nepali culture. The festival brings together women from across Nepal to share joy through music, dance and devotion.

Every year, thousands gather at temples and public spaces, turning Teej into one of Nepal’s most colorful and widely celebrated cultural events.

Teej 2026: What to Expect

With Teej 2083 approaching in September, markets across Nepal are expected to see increased demand for red saris, jewelry, bangles, mehendi and festive foods. Temples, particularly Pashupatinath, are also expected to witness large crowds of devotees participating in prayers and religious ceremonies.

As Nepal prepares for another vibrant Teej celebration, the festival continues to symbolize devotion, tradition and the enduring cultural heritage of the country.
