It was Salah’s goals that guided Egypt back to the FIFA World Cup in 2018 after a 28-year absence. He scored five goals during the qualifiers, including a crucial brace against Congo in the decisive match to secure Egypt’s ticket to Russia. However, due to a shoulder injury, Salah could not play the tournament at full fitness. Despite this, he still managed to leave his mark.

Historic Breakthrough: In a 3-1 defeat against hosts Russia, Salah scored from the penalty spot. That goal was Egypt’s first World Cup goal since their 1-1 draw against the Netherlands in the 1990 FIFA World Cup.

In the final group game against Saudi Arabia, Salah gave Egypt the lead in the 22nd minute. With that strike, he became the first Egyptian player to score from open play in a World Cup since Abdulrahman Fawzi in the 1934 World Cup. With their talisman Mohamed Salah turning 34 just the day before their fixture against New Zealand, this edition is widely seen as Egypt’s best opportunity to end their winless World Cup drought.
