Former Minister Mohammad Aftab Alam Passes Away

Former Minister and Nepali Congress leader Mohammad Aftab Alam has passed away.

According to hospital sources, he died last night at around 2:30 AM while being treated for serious health problems.

He had been receiving treatment at Kathmandu Medical College (KMC) and was kept on a ventilator for several days. Hospital chief Narayan Prasad Dahal said that Alam was admitted about two weeks ago. He was first kept in the ICU, and as his condition worsened, he was put on a ventilator.

Doctors said that his kidneys had failed, and he was undergoing regular dialysis.

Earlier in June (Jestha), soon after being released from Nakkhu Prison, he suffered a brain stroke. At that time, he was treated at Annapurna Neuro Hospital in Maitighar and later went to India for further treatment. Doctors believe he died due to long-term effects of that brain stroke.

In 2008 (Chait 27, 2064 BS), a bomb exploded at his uncle Sheikh Indris’s house in Rajpur, Rautahat, while making explosives before the Constituent Assembly election. Several people were injured in the blast. Later, those injured were reportedly burned alive in a brick kiln instead of being taken for treatment.

For this case, the Rautahat District Court had sentenced Alam to life imprisonment, but the High Court later overturned the decision, and he was released. Soon after his release, he suffered the brain stroke mentioned earlier.
