The 10 Biggest World Cup Flops in History

Tunisia’s disappointing FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign came to an end with a 3-1 defeat to the Netherlands in their final Group F match, sealing one of the worst performances in World Cup history.

The North African side finished the tournament without earning a single point from three matches and ended with a goal difference of minus 10. Tunisia opened their campaign with a 5-1 defeat to Sweden before suffering a 4-0 loss to Japan. Following the opening defeat, head coach Sabri Lamouchi was dismissed and replaced by Hervé Renard, but the managerial change failed to reverse the team’s fortunes as they also lost 3-1 to the Netherlands.

While the FIFA World Cup is remembered for unforgettable triumphs, it has also produced some of the tournament’s most disappointing campaigns. Tunisia’s performance now joins a list of teams whose World Cup appearances became synonymous with heavy defeats and early exits.

1. North Korea (2010)

North Korea showed promise in their opening Group G match, narrowly losing 2-1 to Brazil. However, their campaign quickly unraveled with a crushing 7-0 defeat to Portugal, inspired by Cristiano Ronaldo, followed by a 3-0 loss to Ivory Coast.

2. Saudi Arabia (2002)

Saudi Arabia endured one of the harshest introductions to a World Cup, losing 8-0 to Germany in their opening match. Miroslav Klose scored a hat-trick and opened his World Cup scoring account in that game. Saudi Arabia then suffered a 1-0 defeat to Cameroon and a 3-0 loss to the Republic of Ireland, exiting without a point.

3. Greece (1994)

Greece failed to score a single goal during their first World Cup appearance in 1994. They were beaten 4-0 by both Argentina and Bulgaria before losing 2-0 to Nigeria, finishing the tournament with three defeats and a goal difference of minus 10.

4. El Salvador (1982)

El Salvador still holds the record for the heaviest defeat in FIFA World Cup history after losing 10-1 to Hungary in their opening match. They also lost to Belgium and Argentina, ending a tournament remembered for its record-breaking defeat.

5. New Zealand (1982)

New Zealand’s World Cup debut proved to be a difficult experience. They lost 5-2 to Scotland, were beaten 3-0 by the Soviet Union, and finished with a 4-0 defeat to Brazil, conceding 12 goals across three matches.

6. Mexico (1978)

Mexico’s appearance on this list remains one of the biggest surprises. They opened with a 3-1 defeat to Tunisia before suffering a heavy 6-0 loss to West Germany and a 3-1 defeat against Poland, finishing without a point.

7. Zaire (1974)

Now known as the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Zaire endured a miserable World Cup debut. They suffered a 9-0 defeat to Yugoslavia before losing 2-0 to both Scotland and Brazil.

8. Haiti (1974)

Haiti’s only World Cup appearance also ended in disappointment. They conceded 14 goals across three matches, losing 3-1 to Italy, 7-0 to Poland, and 4-1 to Argentina.

9. South Korea (1954)

South Korea’s first World Cup campaign remains one of the toughest in tournament history. They were hammered 9-0 by Hungary before losing 7-0 to Turkey in a three-team group, finishing with two heavy defeats and a goal difference of minus 16.

With three defeats, no points, and a minus-10 goal difference, Tunisia’s 2026 campaign now ranks among the most disappointing performances the FIFA World Cup has ever witnessed.
