Argentina Expected to Make One Change for Austria Clash

After opening their FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign with an impressive 3-0 victory over Algeria, defending champions Argentina are set to face Austria in their second Group J match on Monday.

A victory in Dallas would put Lionel Scaloni’s side on the verge of securing a place in the knockout stage.

Despite the convincing performance in their opening match, Argentina are expected to make one change to their starting lineup. Right-back Gonzalo Montiel is likely to be rested after suffering a hamstring injury in his right leg, with Nahuel Molina expected to take his place in the starting XI.

There has also been discussion about a couple of other positions, but major changes to the team that defeated Algeria appear unlikely.

Forward Julián Álvarez, who recently recovered from injury and came off the bench in the opening match, has been mentioned as a possible replacement for Lautaro Martínez. However, with Álvarez still working toward full fitness, coach Scaloni is expected to continue trusting Lautaro in the starting lineup.

In attack and midfield, competition remains between Thiago Almada and Nicolás González. Almada currently appears to have the edge and is likely to retain his place after starting against Algeria.

At left-back, Facundo Medina is expected to start once again. Although Nicolás Tagliafico has recovered from injury, Argentina are unlikely to take any risks and may instead use him during the second half.

Scaloni could also hand midfield veteran Leandro Paredes some playing time during the match.

Probable Argentina Starting XI

Goalkeeper:

  • Emiliano Martínez

Defenders:

  • Nahuel Molina
  • Cristian Romero
  • Lisandro Martínez
  • Facundo Medina

Midfielders:

  • Rodrigo De Paul
  • Enzo Fernández
  • Alexis Mac Allister

Forwards:

  • Thiago Almada / Nicolás González
  • Lionel Messi
  • Lautaro Martínez

Argentina will be aiming for back-to-back victories and an early qualification to the knockout rounds, while Austria will look to cause an upset and strengthen their own chances of advancing from Group J.
