Iraq Coach Jokes About Using Three Goalkeepers to Stop Mbappe Ahead of France Clash

For most defenders and coaches in world football, stopping Kylian Mbappe has become one of the toughest challenges in the game. His blistering pace, clinical finishing, and ability to deliver in big matches constantly put opposing teams under pressure.

Despite numerous tactical plans designed to contain him, finding an effective solution remains extremely difficult.

The France captain is once again at the center of attention after a record-breaking performance in his team’s opening FIFA World Cup 2026 match. Mbappé has already surpassed Brazilian legend Pelé in World Cup goals and continues to climb rapidly up the tournament’s all-time scoring charts. He also recently became France’s all-time leading international goalscorer.

France will face Iraq in their second Group I match on Monday, and as expected, much of the pre-match discussion has revolved around how to stop Mbappé and France’s formidable attack.

Asked about the challenge during a press conference, Iraq head coach Graham Arnold responded with humor.

“I asked whether I could play three goalkeepers at the same time,” Arnold joked with a smile. “Apparently, the rules don’t allow that.”

His comment perfectly illustrated the threat Mbappé poses and the difficulties opponents face when preparing to play against him.

Iraq are also dealing with their own concerns after suffering a 4-1 defeat to Norway in their opening match. Captain and goalkeeper Jalal Hassan conceded four goals against the Norwegians, leaving uncertainty over who will start between the posts against France.

Despite the challenge ahead, Arnold remains determined to keep his players confident.

“How France play is not something we can control,” he said. “What we can control is our own performance. My players are fully prepared to go out there and show the world what they are capable of.”

While Mbappé’s goals and records continue to dominate headlines, the France captain is also set to reach another major milestone against Iraq.

The match will mark his 100th international appearance for France, a remarkable achievement for one of the world’s brightest football stars.

Speaking about the landmark occasion, Mbappé said:

“Playing for the national team is always a source of pride and happiness. There is nothing greater than representing your country. Reaching 100 international matches is a special moment, and achieving it at a tournament as prestigious as the World Cup makes it even more meaningful.”

As France look to secure an early place in the knockout rounds, all eyes will once again be on Mbappé, while Iraq search for a way to contain one of football’s most dangerous attackers.
