World Cup Contenders Secure Wins in International Friendlies Ahead of FIFA World Cup 2026

Several FIFA World Cup 2026 title contenders recorded victories in international friendly matches as they continued preparations for next year’s tournament. European powerhouses Germany, Portugal, England, and Scotland all emerged victorious in their respective fixtures.

Germany Defeat Co-Hosts United States

Germany secured a 2-1 win over World Cup co-hosts the United States. The visitors took the lead just two minutes into the match when Kai Havertz found the back of the net.

The United States responded in the 37th minute through Antonee Robinson, who leveled the score before halftime.

Germany regained the lead in the 57th minute when Leroy Sané converted a pass from Havertz. No further goals were scored as Germany held on for the victory.

Portugal Edge Chile in Eventful Encounter

Portugal defeated Chile 2-1 on home soil in a match that saw both teams finish with 10 men.

Gonçalo Guedes opened the scoring in the 58th minute before Bruno Fernandes doubled Portugal’s advantage in the 75th minute.

Chile pulled one back deep into second-half stoppage time through Lucas Cepeda, but it was not enough to prevent defeat.

Both sides were reduced to 10 players before halftime after Portugal’s Rafael Leão and Chile’s Iván Román were shown red cards during first-half stoppage time.

Kane Gives England Narrow Victory

England registered a hard-fought 1-0 victory over New Zealand.

Captain Harry Kane scored the decisive goal in first-half stoppage time, ensuring the Three Lions maintained their winning momentum ahead of the World Cup.

Belgium Cruise Past Tunisia

Belgium produced the most dominant performance of the day, thrashing Tunisia 5-0.

The goals came from Leandro Trossard (28′), Charles De Ketelaere (53′), Kevin De Bruyne (65′), Dodi Lukebakio (85′), and Nicolas Raskin (87′).

Scotland Rout Bolivia

Scotland cruised to a convincing 4-0 win over Bolivia.

Che Adams scored twice, while Lawrence Shankland and Scott McTominay added a goal each to complete the rout.

Switzerland Held by Australia

Switzerland were held to a 1-1 draw by Australia.

The Swiss side took the lead in the 14th minute through Dan Ndoye. However, Australia equalized in the 56th minute thanks to Tete Yengi, earning the Socceroos a share of the spoils.

The friendly matches provided valuable preparation for teams looking to build momentum ahead of the FIFA World Cup 2026, which will be hosted by United States, Canada, and Mexico.
