Munoz Goal Sends Colombia Into FIFA World Cup 2026 Knockout Stage

Daniel Munoz scored the decisive goal in the second half as Colombia secured a 1-0 victory over DR Congo and booked their place in the knockout stage of the FIFA World Cup 2026.

With back-to-back wins in Group K, Colombia advanced to the next round and moved to the top of the standings with six points. They had previously defeated Uzbekistan 3-1 in their opening match.

DR Congo, meanwhile, suffered their first defeat of the tournament and remain third in the group with one point from two matches.

Playing at Guadalajara Stadium in Mexico, Colombia dominated possession and created numerous chances from the opening whistle but had to wait until the second half to find the breakthrough.

The winning goal came in the 76th minute when Daniel Muñoz finished a pass from Juan Quintero to give Colombia the lead. The strike ultimately proved enough to secure all three points.

Luis Díaz appeared to have added two more goals for Colombia, but both efforts were ruled out for offside.

In the first half, DR Congo goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi produced an outstanding performance, making six saves to keep Colombia scoreless. He finished the match with eight saves overall.

Colombia registered 19 shots during the game, with nine on target, while DR Congo managed eight attempts, only one of which tested the goalkeeper.

Colombia will now face Portugal in their final Group K match as they aim to secure first place in the group. Portugal earned their first win of the tournament on Tuesday with a commanding 5-0 victory over Uzbekistan. A draw against Colombia would be enough for Portugal to qualify for the knockout stage.

DR Congo will take on Uzbekistan in their final group match. A victory could still keep their hopes alive of reaching the knockout rounds as one of the tournament’s best third-placed teams.
