Nepal’s rising mixed martial arts star Rabindra Dhant is set for one of the biggest fights of his career after booking a Road to UFC semi-final showdown with New Zealand fighter Kasib Murdoch.

The bout has already attracted attention beyond the cage after Murdoch claimed that he had attempted to arrange a fight with Dhant a year ago, but alleged that the Nepali fighter turned down the opportunity because he was “scared.” Murdoch repeated the claim in recent social media interviews ahead of their highly anticipated meeting.

Dhant, however, has given little attention to the verbal exchanges and instead remains focused on his UFC dream.

The Nepali bantamweight earned his place in the semi-finals of Road to UFC Season 5 with an impressive technical knockout victory over the Philippines’ Kimbert Alintozon in Macau last week. The win strengthened his growing reputation as one of South Asia’s most promising MMA talents and moved him one step closer to securing a coveted UFC contract.

Murdoch now stands in his way.

The New Zealander has sought to build intrigue around the contest by revisiting the failed attempt to arrange a fight between the pair last year. According to Murdoch, discussions took place for a bout in Bali, but the fight never materialised. He suggested Dhant was unwilling to accept the challenge at the time.

Whether the claim was genuine criticism or pre-fight promotion, it has added extra tension to a contest that already carries significant stakes.

For Dhant, known in Nepal as the “Tiger of Bajhang,” the semi-final represents another opportunity to make history. The former Matrix Fight Night bantamweight champion became the first Nepali fighter to win a major international MMA title and is now aiming to become Nepal’s first athlete to earn a UFC contract through the Road to UFC tournament.

A victory over Murdoch would send Dhant into the tournament final and leave him just one win away from reaching the world’s premier MMA promotion.

The date for the semi-final has yet to be announced, but anticipation is already building among Nepali MMA fans eager to see whether Dhant can answer Murdoch’s words inside the cage rather than outside it.
