Sunny Patel Joins Kathmandu Gorkhas for Nepal Premier League

Popular Nepali all-rounder Sunny Patel has been signed by Kathmandu Gorkhas for the second season of the Nepal Premier League (NPL) cricket tournament. With his signing, Kathmandu Gorkhas, owned by Kathmandu Sports Development Ventures Pvt. Ltd., have now completed their quota of six foreign players.

Foreign Players Signed by Kathmandu Gorkhas

The team has already signed several international players:

  • South African wicketkeeper-batter Ricardo Vasconcelos, who plays in England
  • Namibian captain Gerhard Erasmus
  • American batter Milind Kumar
  • English players Ben Charlesworth and John Simpson

Except for Erasmus, all of them will be playing for the Gorkhas for the first time.

Sunny Patel’s Cricket Journey

Sunny Patel is a well-known name in Nepal’s franchise cricket. In 2019, he helped CYC Attariya win the Dhangadhi Premier League (DPL) title and was named Player of the Final and Player of the Series. He also won the Pokhara Premier League title with Chitwan Rhinos.

Originally from Gujarat, India, the 38-year-old has played in India’s Ranji Trophy and has recently been active in the United States. In October, he played a key role in helping Atlanta Fire win the Minor League Cricket title, taking 16 wickets in 10 matches.

Reunion with Coach Monty Desai

Atlanta Fire’s coach was Monty Desai, who is now also coaching Kathmandu Gorkhas in the NPL. Monty praised Sunny’s performance and attitude, saying:

“Sunny was an important part of Atlanta Fire. I’ve seen his game closely; he brings energy, calmness, and maturity. He can contribute with both bat and ball, and his experience in Major League Cricket will be valuable for the Gorkhas. We’re excited to have him; his versatility and professionalism will strengthen our team balance.”

Recent Performances

In June and July, Sunny also represented MI New York in the Major League Cricket (MLC), where he played six matches.
