Today’s Weather in Nepal: Heavy Rain in Hills, Heatwave in Terai (May 23)

Nepal is currently experiencing the combined effects of western winds, local winds, and a low-pressure system positioned near the country’s eastern region.

According to the Meteorological Forecasting Division under the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology, weather conditions vary significantly across different regions today, bringing a mix of rain, snow, and extreme heat.

Current Weather Status

• Cloud Cover: The weather is generally cloudy in the Koshi Province, as well as in other hilly and mountainous regions. Madhesh Province is experiencing partly cloudy skies, while the rest of the Terai plains remain mostly clear.
• Current Rainfall: Light to moderate rain accompanied by thunder and lightning is currently occurring at a few places in Gandaki Province and one or two locations in Sudurpashchim Province.

Today’s Afternoon Forecast

• Sky Conditions: Generally cloudy skies are expected in Koshi, Bagmati, and Gandaki provinces. Partly cloudy conditions will prevail in Madhesh Province and the hilly/mountainous areas of other provinces. The remaining Terai plains will stay mostly clear.
• Rain and Snowfall:
  • Moderate rain and snowfall are likely in some parts of the hilly and mountainous terrains of Koshi, Bagmati, and Gandaki provinces.
  • A few places in the Terai plains of Koshi, Bagmati, and Gandaki (including Madhesh Province) might see light to moderate rain.
  • One or two areas in the hilly and mountainous regions of Lumbini and Karnali provinces may also experience similar weather.
• Heavy Rain Alert: There is a possibility of heavy rainfall in one or two places within the hilly regions of Gandaki Province.
• Heatwave Warning: In stark contrast to the rain, the hilly areas of Sudurpashchim and Lumbini provinces will experience hot weather, while a severe heatwave is expected across their Terai plains.

Tonight’s Forecast

• Sky Conditions: Tonight, skies will remain generally cloudy in Koshi, Madhesh, Bagmati, and Gandaki provinces. The rest of the country’s hilly and mountainous regions will be partly cloudy, while the remaining Terai areas will be mostly clear.
• Overnight Precipitation: Light to moderate rain and snow, accompanied by thunder and lightning, are forecast for:
  • Some areas of Koshi and Madhesh provinces.
  • A few places in the hilly and mountainous regions of Bagmati, Gandaki, and Karnali provinces.
• Overnight Heavy Rain Alert: One or two locations in both the hilly and Terai belts of Koshi Province are at risk of heavy rainfall tonight.
