UAE Launches Its First National Passenger Rail Network, Desert Express

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has officially launched its first national passenger rail service, marking a major milestone in the country’s transportation sector. The long-awaited Desert Express network is now open to the public and will eventually connect 11 cities across the UAE.

The inaugural passenger train departed from Fujairah, located on the Gulf of Oman, at 5:34 a.m. local time on Tuesday. The train covered approximately 250 kilometers, arriving at Mohammed Bin Zayed City Station in Abu Dhabi at 7:19 a.m., completing the journey in 1 hour and 45 minutes.

According to CNN, the rail operator Etihad Rail has begun the initial phase of passenger operations. The company said the first journey was one of six scheduled services operating on the network’s opening day.

Etihad Rail also revealed that more than 10,000 tickets had already been sold before the service officially began.

The new trains offer passengers a modern travel experience with air-conditioned coaches, onboard Wi-Fi, power outlets, and reserved seating. Premium-class services are also available, providing additional comfort and exclusive amenities.

Ticket prices start at AED 55 (around USD 15) for Comfort Class and AED 120 (around USD 33) for Premium Class. The company currently operates a fleet of 13 trains, each capable of carrying up to 400 passengers.

Ajja Al Suwaidi, Chief Operating Officer of Etihad Rail, described the launch as a landmark moment for the country.

“This morning’s first departure from Fujairah marks the moment when our national vision becomes part of everyday life. It offers people a new way to connect with one another, with opportunities, and with the unique places that make our country special. Years from now, today’s passengers will proudly say they were there at the very beginning,” she said in a company statement.

Network Expansion Plans

The rail network is set to expand later this year. New stations at Dubai and Al Dhaid are scheduled to open on September 30, followed by stations in Al Dhafra three months later. According to Etihad Rail, the full route will be completed after the Sharjah Station opens by the end of March next year.

Once fully operational, the 900-kilometer network will play a key role in the UAE’s efforts to reduce carbon emissions and promote sustainable transportation. It will connect the Gulf of Oman with the Persian Gulf, linking major Emirates, Abu Dhabi’s inland regions, and Ghuweifat on the Saudi Arabian border.

Integrated Public Transport

Since the UAE is known for its strong car culture, authorities have also focused on ensuring passengers can easily travel between railway stations and their final destinations.

Abdullah Hamad Al Ghafeli, Acting Director General of the Integrated Transport Centre, said the passenger rail service has been integrated with Abu Dhabi’s wider public transport network.

“We have worked closely with Etihad Rail to connect the passenger rail service with Abu Dhabi’s broader public transportation system, making it easier than ever for residents and visitors to continue their journeys using buses, taxis, and other transport options,” he said.

Tourism Impact Yet to Be Seen

While the launch has generated significant excitement across the UAE, its long-term impact on international tourism remains uncertain.

Rail travel expert Mark Smith, founder of the popular railway website The Man in Seat 61, said he is still unsure about the service’s broader significance.

“To be honest, I’m not entirely sure how significant it is at this stage. It doesn’t yet connect Abu Dhabi with the outside world, I don’t hear of many people traveling there specifically, and it’s unclear whether the new rail destinations alone will attract visitors,” Smith said.

The launch of the Desert Express represents a major step toward modernizing the UAE’s transport infrastructure, with further expansion expected to strengthen regional connectivity and encourage more sustainable travel.
