Belgium Top Group After 5-1 Win Over New Zealand, Advance to Knockout Stage

Belgium produced a dominant performance to defeat New Zealand 5-1 in their final group-stage match of the FIFA World Cup 2026, securing top spot in Group G and confirming their place in the knockout rounds.

Coming into the match with two consecutive draws, Belgium needed a win to guarantee qualification, and they delivered in style with a commanding attacking display at the Vancouver Stadium in Canada.

Leandro Trossard was the standout performer, scoring twice, while Kevin De Bruyne, Romelu Lukaku, and Alexis Saelemaekers also added a goal each to complete the emphatic victory.

New Zealand managed a late consolation through Elijah Just, but they were outclassed for most of the match by Belgium’s superior attacking quality and control.

Trossard opened the scoring in the 28th minute, giving Belgium an early advantage. He doubled his tally shortly after halftime in the 50th minute to put his side firmly in control of the game.

Kevin De Bruyne extended the lead in the 66th minute before Romelu Lukaku added a fourth goal in the 86th minute. Saelemaekers completed the rout in stoppage time, scoring in the 94th minute.

New Zealand briefly threatened a response when Elijah Just pulled one back in the 84th minute, but it had little impact on the final outcome.

The victory ensured Belgium finished top of Group G with five points. They edged out Egypt on goal difference after Egypt were held to a 1-1 draw by Iran, with both teams finishing level on points.

Belgium had previously drawn both of their opening matches, leaving them in a must-win situation going into the final group game. Their strong performance against New Zealand not only secured qualification but also sent a strong message ahead of the knockout stage.
