Boyfriend Arrested for Murder of Avina Baidh in Siraha

The murder of 17-year-old Avina Baidh from Baltiya, Karjanha Municipality–1 in Siraha, has been found to have been committed by her own boyfriend.

One month after the incident, Siraha Police on Tuesday arrested and made public 45-year-old Rambalak Chaudhary of Kshireshwor Municipality–3, Dhanusha, in connection with Avina’s murder.

According to preliminary police investigation, Chaudhary and Avina were in a love relationship for a long time. Chaudhary is a married man and has one child. However, due to ongoing disputes with his wife, he had been living separately.

Avina’s body was found on Mangsir 22 at around 2:45 pm in bushes near the Kamala Irrigation Canal in School Tole, Karjanha Municipality–2. She is the daughter of Surya Dev Baidh of Baltiya.

Siraha Police spokesperson DSP Ramesh Bahadur Pal said the murder was confirmed after a joint investigation by the Central Investigation Bureau (CIB), Madhesh Province Police Office, District Police Office Siraha, and Area Police Office Mirchaiya.

Police investigation revealed that on the night of Mangsir 21, at around 7 pm, Chaudhary consumed alcohol at a hotel in Portaha, Dhanusha, and repeatedly called Avina. At around 8:30 pm, the two talked on the phone, after which Chaudhary asked her to meet him.

At around 9:15 pm, Avina reached Chaudhary’s rented room. While returning from there along the Kamala River bank, the two had consensual physical relations near the incident site, police said.

Avina had been asking Chaudhary to marry her for some time. However, Chaudhary disliked that Avina used to make audio and video calls with other men. Police said the issue had caused disputes between them earlier as well.

Suspecting that Avina had relationships with other men, Chaudhary became angry and strangled her. He also hit her right cheek with a stone. After Avina became unconscious, he carried her to nearby bushes and crushed her face with a stone before fleeing the scene, DSP Pal said.

Police have taken Chaudhary into custody, extended his detention through Siraha District Court, and are continuing investigation under a murder charge.
