England Eye Knockout Spot as Unbeaten Ghana Stand in Their Way

England and Ghana will face off in a highly anticipated Group L clash at Boston Stadium on Monday as both unbeaten sides look to strengthen their position at the FIFA World Cup 2026.

England made an impressive start to their campaign with a 4-2 victory over Croatia and are now within touching distance of a fifth occasion in World Cup history where they have won their opening two matches. While Thomas Tuchel’s side showed some defensive vulnerabilities against Croatia, their attacking display was among the most explosive of the tournament so far.

Ghana, meanwhile, arrive full of confidence after edging Panama 1-0 in their opening match. The Black Stars secured three valuable points and now have the opportunity to take a major step toward the knockout rounds. For head coach Carlos Queiroz, the match also carries an element of personal motivation after his Iran side suffered a heavy 6-2 defeat to England at the 2022 World Cup.

A victory for England would secure their place in the knockout stage. If Croatia defeat Panama in the group’s other fixture, the Three Lions could also seal top spot in Group L with a game to spare.

Head-to-Head

This will be only the second meeting between England and Ghana and their first-ever competitive encounter at a World Cup or any other official tournament.

The only previous meeting came in an international friendly in 2011, which ended in a 1-1 draw.

There is a significant gap in the FIFA rankings, with England ranked fourth in the world and Ghana sitting 73rd. England also boast an impressive record against African opposition, remaining unbeaten in eight previous World Cup matches against teams from the continent.

However, England were beaten 3-1 by Senegal in an international friendly in June 2025, proving African teams remain capable of causing major upsets.

Team News

England

Defender Trevoh Chalobah, who was called up as an emergency replacement for the injured Tino Livramento, has fully integrated with the squad and is available for selection.

Winger Bukayo Saka is still recovering from an ankle injury, making it likely that Noni Madueke will retain his place in the starting lineup. Saka could instead be introduced during the second half.

Ghana

Star midfielder Thomas Partey is available after missing the opening match due to visa-related issues that prevented him from entering Canada in time.

First-choice goalkeeper Lawrence Ati-Zigi, who suffered a groin injury in the victory over Panama, has returned to training. However, if he is unable to recover in time, Benjamin Asare is expected to continue between the posts.

Players to Watch

England

Harry Kane (Striker)

England’s captain produced an influential display against Croatia and remains the team’s primary goal threat. His intelligent movement inside the penalty area and clinical finishing could prove decisive against Ghana’s physically strong defence.

Noni Madueke (Winger)

With Saka still short of full fitness, Madueke is expected to start again. The winger is currently in excellent form, and his pace, direct running, and dribbling ability could create significant problems for Ghana’s back line.

Jude Bellingham (Midfielder)

Bellingham continues to be the heartbeat of England’s midfield. Alongside controlling the tempo of the game, he possesses the ability to break into the opposition box and contribute goals, making him one of the most dangerous all-around midfielders in the tournament.

Ghana

Thomas Partey (Midfielder)

The former Arsenal midfielder is expected to be the driving force in Ghana’s midfield. Partey’s main task will be to disrupt England’s attacking rhythm and limit the influence of Jude Bellingham in central areas.

Caleb Yirenkyi (Midfielder)

Yirenkyi emerged as Ghana’s hero in the opening match, scoring a dramatic stoppage-time winner against Panama. His partnership with Partey and ability to launch dangerous counterattacks could make him a key figure against England.

Match Outlook

England enter the contest as clear favourites based on ranking, squad depth, and recent form. However, Ghana’s confidence following their opening victory, combined with the return of Thomas Partey, could make this a far more competitive contest than many expect.

With a place in the knockout rounds potentially on the line, both teams have plenty to play for in what promises to be one of the standout matches of Group L.
