Bird Flu Confirmed in Two Locations in Kavrepalanchok

Bird flu has been confirmed in two locations in Kavrepalanchok district, prompting authorities to begin culling infected birds and strengthen monitoring efforts.

According to Brajkishor Thakur, chief of the District Livestock Service Office, the infection was detected at a layer chicken farm operated by Badri Khatri in Sanga, Ward No. 13 of Banepa Municipality, and in the Sukumbasi settlement area of Ward No. 7 in Panauti Municipality.

Officials said bird flu was confirmed in 1,650 layer chickens at the Sanga farm, as well as in ducks and locally raised chickens in Panauti.

Authorities have launched disposal operations to prevent the further spread of the disease. The culling of infected chickens at the Sanga-based poultry farm has already been completed, while the disposal of infected ducks and local chickens in Panauti is currently underway.

The District Livestock Service Office said the risk of infection appears to be higher in areas where poultry and ducks are raised in open environments and where biosecurity measures are weak.

However, Thakur noted that most large commercial poultry farms in the district have been following biosecurity standards, and no infections have been reported at such facilities so far.

Poultry farmers have expressed concerns over what they describe as insufficient coordination among government agencies involved in disease control efforts. Stakeholders have complained about a lack of effective coordination between the federal ministry, the Department of Livestock Services, and provincial offices.

Following the confirmation of bird flu cases, authorities have called for stricter monitoring of poultry and bird transportation. The District Livestock Service Office has also urged administrative authorities to assist in enforcing health certificate requirements and conducting rigorous inspections of poultry shipments at checkpoints to help contain the outbreak.
